SITA NAVAMI

ree

We all are aware of Rama Navami, the day Lord Maha Vishnu took a human form and appeared on the earth. We celebrate Sri Rama Navami in a grand manner. How about Sita Navami?

Quote from Valmiki Ramayana Bala Kandam Sargam 66

According to the Ramayana Sita manifested from a divine earthen pot in the kingdom of Mithila from a farm field to King Siradhvaja Janaka and Queen Sunayana.

It is said that when King Siradhvaja Janakawas ploughing the land with a plow, a part of his plough got stuck in the earth. On digging that place, he found an infant girl in an earthen pot. A tip of the plow is called Sita, and hence the girl was named Sita.

The date and time of the manifestation of the infant Sita is recorded as the ninth day of Shukla Navami in the Vaishakha month of Pushya Nakshatra in the Ramayana.

Hence the day is celebrated as Sita Navami or Janaki Navami / Janaki Jayanti which falls exactly one month after Ram Navami. In the year 2025 Sita Navami was celebrated yesterday, on 5th May 2025.
